Wärtsilä X62 engine

Wärtsilä has secured two separate contracts to deliver seven new Wärtsilä X62 engines for ships being built for Greek and Swiss owners.

Wärtsilä X62 two-stroke, low-speed engines will be equipped on four new long range two (LR2) tankers being built by South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries for Greek shipowner Kyklades Maritime.

The same model of engine will also be used to power three bulk carriers to be built by Hyundai Mipo Dockyard at its facilities in Vietnam for Switzerland-based shipping company Suisse-Atlantique.

Designed for panamax bulk carriers, aframax or LR2 tankers and container feeders, the X62 engine is part of the new Wärtsilä Generation X two-stroke engine family.

The X62 suits vessels built to Hyundai’s Ecodesign, developed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

The manufacturing will be carried out by Wärtsilä’s licensee, Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea.

The new engine meets the fuel efficiency and emission targets for the new vessels. X-series engines can achieve daily fuel consumption savings of up to 10%, along with reduced lubricating oil consumption compared to previous models.

Wärtsilä will deliver the engines to the four 115,000dwt tankers in June 2014, with the vessels scheduled to start service by the end of 2014.

Delivery of the engines to the three 88,000dwt bulk carriers is scheduled for April, July and October of 2015, while the ships are expected to be launched in June, September and December of 2015.
