Wärtsilä has secured a five-year contract from Finnish ship owner Viking Line to maintain and service the liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fuelled passenger ferry Viking Grace.
The deal covers maintenance of four Wärtsilä 50DF dual-fuel main engines and the LNGPac gas system’s safety valves supplied by the company.

As part of the deal, Wärtsilä will be responsible for engine maintenance planning, maintenance work, condition monitoring, spare parts supply, technical support as well as workshop services.
Wärtsilä aims to extend intervals between maintenance to optimise spare part deliveries and provide optimal operating efficiency and fuel consumption to reduce operating costs.
Viking Line senior vice president of marine operations & newbuilding Tony Öhman said: "The maintenance agreement provides predictability in maintenance issues, and through extending maintenance intervals, we can lower operating costs and optimise the lifecycle efficiency of Viking Grace."
Viking Line took delivery of the €240m Viking Grace from STX Turku shipyard in January 2013.

According to the company, the vessel, which is equipped with LNG-fuelled DF engines, can sail without restrictions in Sulphur Emissions Control Areas (SECAs) and the upcoming Nitrogen Emissions Control Areas (NECAs).
With Wärtsilä’s dual-fuel technology, the LNG-fuelled passenger ferry meets and exceeds the existing and anticipated IMO and EU environmental regulations for maritime applications.
