Finnish manufacturer Wärtsilä has secured a contract from Armada Offshore MPSV, a subsidiary of Malaysian offshore oilfield services provider Bumi Armada Berhad, to design a series of four multi-purpose platform support vessels (MPSVs).

Wärtsilä will also provide a systems package for each of the vessels, which will be built by a subsidiary of Malaysia’s Nam Cheong at one of its subcontracted shipyards, Fujian Mawei Shipbuilding in China.

Apart from the basic customised design, the company will supply each vessel with a main power generation system, a propulsion system, the Wärtsilä low loss concept (LLC) electrical system and an automation system.

In March 2013, Armada Offshore MPSV finalised a $130m contract with Nam Cheong to build four MPSVs.

All four ABS Class MPSVs will have a length of 88.8m, cargo capacity of 5,000dwt and come equipped with the dynamic positioning 2 system (DP2).

Each vessel will be capable of accommodating 60 people and will be designed to support offshore deepwater activities with multi-purpose functions of transporting cargo, oil recovery and standby/rescue work.

Based on Wärtsilä’s WSD 1000 design, the vessels will meet requirements and operational modes for offshore applications.

Each vessel will have a length of 88.8m, breadth of 20m, depth of 8.4m and will be capable of travelling at speeds of up to 15 knots.

The contract follows a similar MPSV order from Bumi Armada Berhad in 2011 for Wärtsilä ship design and fully integrated machinery, electrics and automation.
