The MS Prinsendam is a cruise ship owned and operated by Holland America Line. The ship was built by Wärtsilä in Turku, Finland, for Royal Viking Line and entered into service as the Royal Viking Sun in 1988.

The ship was acquired by Seabourn Cruise Line in 1999 and renamed the Seabourn Sun. It was transferred to Holland America Line and renamed the Prinsendam in 2002.

The 37,983t ship has an overall length of 203.9m, a beam of 32.3m and a draught of 7m. It has 13 decks, of which nine are passenger decks. The ship can accommodate 835 passengers and 470 crew.

Prinsendam refurbishment

In January 2010 the ship completed a major refurbishment at Freeport, the Bahamas. The refurbishment was part of the $525m Signature of Excellence programme. The improvements included the addition of new staterooms, the expansion of the aft pool deck and upgrades to public areas.

The refurbishment added 21 staterooms on the ship’s aft. This increased passenger capacity from 793 to 835. The aft pool deck area was expanded to include a bar. The Wajang Theatre and Culinary Arts Centre added new furniture and carpeting.

Staterooms

The stateroom classifications include standard and single-interior staterooms, large ocean-view staterooms, deluxe veranda ocean-view suits, superior veranda suites, deluxe veranda suites and penthouse veranda suites.

Standard staterooms feature two lower beds, a walk-in closet, a bathtub and a shower. Suites have two lower beds that can be converted into a king-size bed, a walk-in closet, a bath with tub and shower, two sinks, a sitting area and private veranda, a refrigerator and floor-to-ceiling windows.

The staterooms added during the refurbishment include 15 deluxe veranda ocean-view staterooms and six standard staterooms. The rooms feature Mariner Dream beds, redesigned closets, a flat panel television and a DVD player.

Dining facilities

The ship’s main dining venues include La Fontaine, the Lido Restaurant and the Pinnacle Grill. La Fontaine serves five-course meals and a list of wines, while the Lido Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and casual dinners. The Pinnacle Grill is a signature alternative restaurant located on deck 7.

Entertainment facilities

The Prinsendam feature lounges, cafés, entertainment venues, a theatre and a casino. The Neptune Lounge is only available to penthouse and deluxe veranda suite guests and offers LCD TV, high-speed internet access and a library.

It also serves breakfast buffets and evening cocktails. The ship’s casino offers blackjack, roulette, video poker, craps and slot machines.

Other lounges include the Explorer’s Lounge and Queen’s Lounge. The Crow’s Nest bar on deck 12 is home to a disco while a stage and dance floor is located on deck 7. Other bars include the Ocean Bar and the Java bar and café. Club HAL, the Club HAL game room and The Loft offer youth activities and entertainment.

The ship has two freshwater pools and three whirlpools. The sports deck features a jogging track, and bocce ball and croquet courts. Other facilities include a photo gallery, a card room, a library and an internet café, a culinary arts centre, a golf simulator and a shopping arcade.

Spa

The Greenhouse Spa & Salon features a treatment room, a sauna/steam room, a beauty salon, Jacuzzi, hot tub and a gymnasium.

Propulsion

The Prinsendam is powered by four Wartsila Sulzer 8 ZAL 40 S diesel engines driving two four-bladed controllable pitch propellers. These engines provide a total power output of 21,120kW. The cruise ship is also equipped with two four-bladed controllable pitch Liaaen bow thrusters, a 360 degrees rotatable stern compass thruster and two semi-balanced rudders. The propulsion system provides a service speed of 18.5kt and a maximum speed of 22kt.
