Germany’s ZF Friedrichshafen has signed a collaboration agreement with Rolls-Royce Power Systems to develop and deliver improved marine propulsion systems.
As part of the deal, both the companies will exchange information and knowledge relating to the development of new marine technologies and products.

With the collaboration, the partnership also aims to provide fully optimised propulsion solutions for future marine propulsion systems, including hybrid propulsion systems or digitally networked solutions.
The deal includes the combination of the MTU brand of engines from Rolls-Royce Power Systems, and marine transmissions from ZF Friedrichshafen.
Rolls-Royce Power Systems CEO Dr Ulrich Dohle said: “Through the even closer collaboration with our long-standing partner ZF, we will further expand our systems expertise and, with our MTU engines, will thus be able to provide our customers with optimally matched and innovative propulsion solutions.”
The newly formed collaboration further aims to work in the fields of marketing, sales and service.

By GlobalDataIn addition, each company intends to extend their respective product range by including jointly developed fully integrated systems.
The companies are also planning to collaborate closely in research and development (R&D), as well as the applications development segment.
ZF is currently focused on providing driveline and chassis technology, as well as active and passive safety technology, mainly for the automotive industry.
Under the MTU brand, Rolls-Royce Power Systems currently develops and produce engines and propulsion systems for ships as well as heavy land, rail and defence vehicles.
