Netherlands-based APM Terminals has received the first three of the ship-to-shore (STS) container cranes and two rail mounted cranes for the intermodal rail facility in its Pacific Coast deep-water terminal at the Port of Lazaro Cardenas in Mexico.
Lazaro Cardenas Terminal 2 (TEC2), which has an estimated annual TEU capacity of 1.2m, is currently under construction with operations expected to commence in 2016.

In 2012, APM Terminals signed a 32-year concession for the design, construction and operation of the $900m Lazaro Cardenas TEC2 facility.
As part of this contract, the phase one construction will include a total of seven STS cranes featuring a 24-container row reach, along with 750m of quay, a fully-automated gate and an on-dock intermodal rail facility as well as being able to accommodate the largest container vessels.
APM Terminals Mexico managing director JD Nielsen said: “Lazaro Cardenas TEC2 will be the most technologically advanced container terminal in Latin America, and we are very proud to be a part of Mexico’s ongoing growth as a major world trading partner and global logistics hub.”
In addition, Maersk Group CEO Andersen has confirmed APM Terminals’ interest in expanding operations into the Port of Veracruz as part of a future public bid, eventually linking the Pacific and Gulf Coast operations through intermodal rail links intersecting near Mexico City, at APM Terminals’ Cuautitlan Izcalli intermodal facility, located near 250 distribution centres in Mexico’s premier industrial zone.

In September, the port operator acquired majority stakes in Spain-based container-terminal operator Grup Maritim which operates Spanish container terminal concessions in Barcelona, Valencia and Castellon, on the Mediterranean coast, as well as in Gijon, on the Bay of Biscay, and in the Canary Islands.
