Japanese shipping company NYK and the Monohakobi Technology Institute have jointly developed an unmanned machinery space (UMS) check system.
This will be the first such system by a Japanese shipping company.

UMS checks are measurements required to be taken before engine plants or equipments can operate unattended.
For the conventional method, the person in charge monitors equipment by performing a large number of checks, and manually records the collected data on paper.
NYK plans to introduce its digital solution, which has been designed for mobile devices, aboard its owned vessels by the end of this year.
The new UMS system doesn’t require paper records and its numeric keypad reduces data-entry time, when compared with using a conventional keypad.

By GlobalDataIn addition, the system will be able to notify the operator if abnormal figures are entered, allowing them to quickly respond. This will mean that the crew is aware of abnormalities sooner.
The system will also display data trends as graphs, allowing chronological changes to be confirmed and the storage of photos or videos of irregular equipment conditions.
The company said UMS check transmits data directly from the mobile terminal to onshore servers, so that onshore staff can browse data in a timely manner.
NYK will continue its efforts to improve operational efficiency and safety management as part of its ‘More Than Shipping 2018’ medium-term management plan, the company stated.
