Cargotec subsidiary MacGregor has received a comprehensive deck equipment contract from China’s New Times Shipyard for installation on Cyprus-based Intership Navigation’s three new 36,500dwt Laker-class bulk carriers.

For these vessels, MacGregor will provide a cargo-handling system consisting of its cranes and hatch covers along with Hatlapa steering gear and electrically driven variable frequency drive (VFD) Hatlapa deck equipment.

MacGregor account manager for Intership Hans Berg said: “The MacGregor team supported Intership with its cargo-handling solution development at a very early stage with planning sessions, technical layouts and budget pricing, so that the shipowner could present the new ship concept further to the charterer.

MacGregor’s equipment package includes hydraulically operated folding hatch covers, four MacGregor electro-hydraulic cranes (two GLB3628 and two GLB3626), a Hatlapa VFD deck machinery ship set and Hatlapa Triton 800 rotary vane steering gear.

Delivery of the equipment is expected to start at the end of 2015 and run through 2016.

Using a DNV-GL-developed and FutureShip-optimised hull form and propulsion system, the vessels will have a 20% reduction in fuel consumption in comparison with similarly classed vessels, Cargotec stated.

Currently, Intership Navigation maintains a fleet of more than 80 vessels, mostly dry bulk, break bulk vessels, cement carriers and product tankers.

MacGregor recently signed a €20m contract with Shell for a Pusnes permanent mooring system.
