Large mobile accumulations of pumice fragments, known as rafts, can cause immeasurable damage to vessels and disrupt shipping routes. But could a new technique, based on extensive research in the Southwest Pacific, be able to predict their dispersal routes – and allow for timely protective measures to be deployed?
