Dutch marine technology firm Damen Marine Components (DMC) has signed a contract to supply a steering system for versatile trawler Cape Arkona.
The 1,150m³ ship is currently under construction at the Baatbygg yard at Maløy in western Norway for Austral Fisheries. It will accommodate 40 people across 26 cabins.

The 70m-long vessel will be designed so that it can be operated as a freezer-trawler, long-liner and potter vessel at the same time.
According to the contract, DMC will provide a Van der Velden Timon flap rudder with a heel bearing and a Van der Velden Commander rotary vane steering gear.
The Timon flap rudder will provide an improved manoeuvring and course-keeping performance compared to conventional rudders.
The rudder model with a surface area of 6.7m² will be able to produce torque of up to 73kNm.

Without removing the rudder stock and the steering gear, the heel bearing can be easily detached for easy mounting and dismounting of the rudder blade.
The heel bearing bush has been built using a synthetic material that enables the heel bearing self-lubrication and reduces any possibility of electrical conductivity.
DMC said that the steering gear is part of the overall propulsion system, which is being supplied by Norway-based Brunvoll.
The propulsion system includes a hybrid twin-in single-out gearbox with a father and son diesel engine configuration and electric motor for diesel-electric mode.
DMC area sales manager Bogdan Mocanu said: “This is yet another achievement in the fishery vessel segment of the demanding Norwegian market, which was possible due to close cooperation between Brunvoll and our sales representative in Norway, Ulmatec.
“With more than 150 references for all types of fishing vessels, this order came right on time.”
Austral Fisheries awarded a contract to Norwegian ship design and engineering company Skipskompetanse to build the Cape Arkona.
