Kalmar has secured a deal to provide an automated straddle carrier system for Eurogate’s container terminal in Wilhelmshaven, Germany.

The system will include four automated, four-high straddle carriers and an emulation system for the container terminal.

The live equipment and emulation system will be powered by Kalmar’s Terminal Logistics System (TLS), which enables all automated equipment, process automation solutions and access control, as well as security and failure monitoring devices to be controlled via a single platform.

Kalmar’s TLS equipment control solution is also pre-integrated with the Navis N4 terminal operating system (TOS).

Delivery of the first Kalmar vehicle is expected to take place in the fourth quarter of next year.

Kalmar Intelligent Horizontal Transportation Solutions vice-president Mikko Mononen said: “Our automated straddle terminal solution and state-of-the-art technology has already been successfully rolled out at major ports in the US and Australia.”

Eurogate will install the Kalmar automated straddle carrier system as part of a pilot initiative, which is to be managed by the company in partnership with APM Terminals.

The project will be implemented in a designated area of Eurogate’s Container Terminal Wilhelmshaven site, which is not used operationally and is not expected to interfere with the terminal’s daily operations.

It is designed to confirm the functionality and safety of automated straddle carrier technology in handling terminal applications.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of the second quarter of 2019.

Eurogate will provide the results of the project to its partners following completion and then decide where to deploy the automated straddle carrier system.
