The Danish Maritime Authority (DMA) has launched an enhanced survey that includes the crew and the daily safety work, in cooperation with passenger ship companies.

Though the technical part of the survey will be similar to the previous one, the new method will also look at how the ships deal with safety in their everyday work.

As a result, the crew of the passenger ships will be involved in the survey and the ship surveyors will be discussing on-board safety with each individual crew member.

Danish Maritime Authority chief ship surveyor Lars G Nielsen said: "Previously, we have focused on whether the ship’s equipment and papers were in order.

"Of course, we must keep this focus, but the new practice means that we will involve a wider segment of the crew and get a possibility of discussing onboard safety with each individual crew member.

The project has just been evaluated and the companies and crews have also received the new survey method. The authority will provide feedback after the survey, which will help the companies to use in their future work, DMA said.

The survey will include renewal surveys, MLC surveys, ISM audits and, in some cases, ISPS surveys are combined into one survey.

The types of ships that will be covered under the survey include passenger ships such as the ships voyages in port areas or lakes and Viking ships, and other special-purpose ships carrying more than 12 passengers.
