Cargotec’s Kalmar has been selected by the Peel Ports Group to install its SmartLane automated gate system at Port of Liverpool in order to streamline and integrate processes from entry to loading or unloading.
The procurement of SmartLane forms part of the group’s £5.5m improvement package for port infrastructure. The new system is expected to expedite turnaround by reducing waiting times and administration for hauliers.

The Liverpool Port is currently using a manual gate system that requires drivers to register at a site office, fill out a form and wait for clearance before entering the terminal.
Peel Ports Liverpool port director David Huck said: “We operate in an increasingly competitive market and our customers require logistics solutions that reduce costs, carbon emissions and congestion.
“Haulier transactions will be fully integrated into our latest terminal operating systems, facilitating secure and efficient visits and minimising turnaround times at our terminals.”
The SmartLane system is equipped with identification technologies to enable automated management of gate operations for trucks at the terminal.

By GlobalDataKalmar Automation vice-president Tommi Pettersson said: “With its optical character recognition, Kalmar SmartLane solution can automatically capture information from all trucks and containers entering and leaving the terminal, cutting operating costs and improving efficiency for all users.”
Kalmar’s partner APS Technology has provided the optical character recognition technology to the SmartLane system.
Deployment of the new system is scheduled to be completed by early 2015.
Peel Ports Group’s new £300m Liverpool2 container port is currently under construction and is scheduled to open at the end of 2015. It is claimed to be Europe’s most advanced container facility.
