German-Danish ferry company Scandlines has awarded a contract to L-3 SAM Electronics and its Danish subsidiary L-3 Lyngsø Marine to retrofit navigation facilities aboard four double-ended passenger and freight ferries.

L-3 SAM and its subsidiary will retrofit the M/F Deutschland, M/F Prins Richard, M/F Prinsesse Benedikte and M/F Schleswig-Holstein ships, which operate the short-distance route between Puttgarden, Germany, and Rødby, Denmark.

Each double-ended ferry will be fitted with L-3’s NACOS Platinum navigation systems on the bow and stern bridges.

L-3 SAM will add a full set of navigation sensors, including AIS, DGPS, Doppler logs, echosounders and wind / weather navigation aids to complete the retrofit.

In order to deliver a complete level of redundancy, workstations on both bridges will be interconnected by a turbo ring ethernet, which will also ensure the highest possible standards of operational safety and efficiency.

X and S-band radars in each NACOS Platinum are linked to two multifunctional multipilot workstations for centralised control of all main radar, ECDIS and conning operations, besides those for automatic steering, track control and route planning.

Upon merging, the radars are set to deliver 360° coverage and visibility.
