US-based Spire Global has introduced two new machine learning and analytics solutions known as Sense Vessels and Predict, which aim to make monitoring vessels from space easier and more efficient.

Both products are capable of improving and speeding up vessel-tracking operations using Spire’s application programme interface (API) analytics technology.

The solutions are backed by a constellation of 40 satellites in orbit, as well as a combined terrestrial feed.

The new Sense Vessels system has been designed to use analytics to find updated information about any of the more than 300,000 ships travelling in the ocean at any given time via a single request to the company’s API.

Spire’s Predict product can use machine learning to predict future vessel positions based on information gathered by the Sense Vessels system.

Spire Global CEO Peter Platzer said: “Our satellites now collect data from over 75,000 unique ships each day.

"They’re tracked in a database of over 300,000 ships that we keep tabs on, and we can predict where ships are going based on their past and present behaviour.

"With many competitors’ aging satellite infrastructure increasingly failing, our strategy of launching a constantly upgraded constellation is proving to be a superior approach."

“This is the successful accomplishment of our mission to provide our customers with more ships, more often, more intelligently.”

The new Spire solutions feature improved maritime data captured by the company’s space-based infrastructure and terrestrial data intelligence.

The addition of new satellites, on-orbit software upgrades and new ground stations have aided Spire in the development of the new products.

Spire GlobalSense product manager Kyle Brazil said: “Our customers have a diverse set of needs, but almost all of them can be served by more and better data served with high reliability.

“With many competitors’ aging satellite infrastructure increasingly failing, our strategy of launching a constantly upgraded constellation is proving to be a superior approach.”

Spire has also announced its intention to make further improvements to its existing analytics.
