Wärtsilä has signed an agreement to maintain the exhaust gas cleaning systems installed in three vessels managed by Norway-based Wilhelmsen Ship Management.
The five-year deal is expected to allow the vessels to comply with the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) rules, which seek to prevent pollution of the marine environment by ships from operational or accidental causes.

It will also ensure that the vessels can fulfil the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) upcoming sulphur limits, scheduled to be effective from 1 January 2020.
All Wilhelmsen vessels are equipped with a 25MW Wärtsilä Hybrid Scrubber System, which has been designed to operate in both open and closed loop, using seawater to remove sulphur oxides (SOx) from the exhaust gas.
The newly signed agreement covers various services such as annual audits and safety tests to ensure MARPOL compliance, calibration of the Continuous Emission Monitoring System (CEMS) and water monitoring system.

Wilhelmsen Ship Management currently provides third-party ship management of vessels and has a portfolio of more than 450 vessels and 9,200 seafarers.
Wärtsilä primarily offers technologies and complete lifecycle solutions for the marine and energy industries.
In January, the company signed a ten-year service partnership agreement with Switzerland’s Winterthur Gas and Diesel (WinGD) to improve its position as an integrated smart solutions provider to the merchant shipping industry.
The deal will make Wärtsiläan an authorised global service provider for all WinGD products worldwide.
