Technology group Wartsila has signed a five-year service agreement with Chinese dredging company Nanjing Changjiang Waterway Engineering.

The long-term agreement was signed in December last year and covers a 13,800m³ trailing suction dredger, named Chang Jing 9, which was added to the company’s fleet recently.

Chang Jing 9 is equipped with two Wartsila 46F engines and was supplied at the end of 2019.

For optimal operation of the engines, Wartsila’s Expert Insight predictive maintenance product will also be applied under the optimised maintenance agreement.

Powered by artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced diagnostics, Expert Insight can monitor equipment and systems in real time.

The service will help to prevent unforeseen maintenance expenditures, along with Wartsila’s Dynamic Maintenance Planning.

It will also enable a flexible maintenance schedule, in line with the ship’s operational plans.

Nanjing Changjiang Waterway Engineering spokesperson said: “Wartsila’s digital maintenance solution and their expert knowledge of engine technology will give real value by increasing the engines’ availability, thereby improving our dredgers’ operations. We have several vessels with Wartsila engines, so we know and trust their services and are pleased to extend our relationship with this long-term service agreement.”

Wartsila Marine power performance services sales director Henrik Wilhelms said: “Lifecycle customer support is a central pillar of our strategy, and our optimised maintenance agreement with Expert Insight is designed to minimise off-hire risk while ensuring accurate and cost-effective predictive maintenance assistance. Support is delivered via Wartsila Expertise Centres to greatly enhance the safety, availability, and efficiency of the installation.”

Wartsila will provide the Asset Diagnostics mobilisation service in early 2021.
