Wärtsilä won a deal from Meyer Werft to provide its Nacos Platinum series of navigation, automation and control solutions, as well as uninterruptable power systems (UPS) for four new cruise ships.
Two of the vessels are currently being built at Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, while the other two will be built at Meyer Turku in Finland.
Each of the vessels will be fitted with Wärtsilä Jovystar Ocean UPS systems, which feature eight 100kVA UPS, five 20kVA UPS, and two 40kVA UPS
Kazakhstan-based Tengizchevroil (TCO) placed a new order, valued at $40m, for two module carrying vessels (MVC) with Blue Water Shipping.
To be built as part of the TCO FGP project, the newly ordered MVC vessels will feature a Vard 921 design and will measure 123m by 16.5m.
Deliveries of the vessels is scheduled by the second quarter of 2018.
Global satellite operator SES introduced its new SES Maritime+ service in a bid to provide high-speed connectivity to vessels passing through oceans across the globe.
Using SES’s global fleet of more than 50 satellites, Maritime+ will allow maritime customers to have easy access to tailor-made bandwidth and coverage packages.
Vessels, while passing through the oceans, will receive smooth roaming services with the help of SES’s over 20 teleports and more than 6,000 points of presence on the ground.
Damen Shipyards Group and the Government of Curaçao signed a concession agreement for the future operation of the current Curaçao Drydock Company.
As part of the deal, Damen will establish a new company under the name Damen Shiprepair Curaçao.
Currently, the facilities of Damen Shiprepair Curaçao consist of two graven docks, as well as around 2,000m of repair quays, equipped with 13 cranes.
Canada-based Corvus Energy was selected by Wärtsilä to provide its lithium ion-based energy storage system (ESS) for powering a new hybrid ferry being built for the UK’s Wightlink Ferries.
As part of the deal, Corvus Energy will provide its next-generation Orca Energy ESS solution, which along with other Wärtsilä equipment, will offer environmental efficiency to the new vessel.
Capable of carrying up to 178 vehicles and over 1,000 passengers, the ferry will enter into service in 2018.
UK-based Rolls-Royce signed a contract to supply propulsion and deck machinery for five new cruise ships being built by Fincantieri at its Monfalcone and Ancona shipyards in Italy.
As part of the deal, two of the vessels, to be owned by Viking Ocean Cruises, will be equipped with a Rolls-Royce Promas system, deck machinery and steering gear.
Another vessel, which is being built for Viking Ocean Cruises, will also use steering gear and deck machinery from Rolls-Royce.
Norway-based classification society DNV GL awarded an approval in principle (AiP) for Vard Engineering Brevik’s new 6,500m³ liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunker vessel design concept.
Before granting the AiP, the vessel was assessed for compliance with the DNV GL gas bunker rules, relevant gas carrier rules and IGC Code's 2016 edition.
The new bunker vessel will receive a 1A tanker for liquefied gas bunker class notation.
Arctech Helsinki Shipyard delivered a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered icebreaker, Polaris, to the Finnish Transport Agency.
After receiving Polaris, which has an icebreaking capacity of 1.8m at a speed of 3.5kt, the Finnish Transport Agency has handed over the vessel to Arctia Icebreaking.

US-based shipbuilding company General Dynamics NASSCO delivered the fourth vessel of a series of five ECO-class product tankers to American Petroleum Tankers.

Global technology group Sonardyne Brasil supplied specific acoustic positioning technology for Fugro’s flagship Brazilian vessel, Fugro Aquarius.
Known as the Ranger 2 Ultra-Short BaseLine (USBL) system, Sonardyne’s acoustic positioning technology is currently being used to track the exact position of Fugro Aquarius’ Work-class remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs) in water depths of up to 3,000m.
Ranger 2 will also help Fugro Aquarius in its subsea inspection, repair and maintenance activities in the Brazilian region.
