Lloyd’s Register has been selected to develop operational procedures and technical specifications for safe LNG bunkering operations at Portsmouth International Port in the UK.

A project to this effect has been commenced by the company, which it expects would position Portsmouth as the UK’s first LNG bunkering facility and hub.

Under the project, Lloyd’s will provide a comprehensive guidance including technical specifications required for bunkering equipment.

In addition, the company will ensure right operational procedures, port safety and emergency planning, and development of effective personnel competence.

Lloyd’s Register Global Gas Technology manager Leonidas Karistios said: “Obviously with growing demand for LNG, ports are looking to understand how they can develop the capability to deliver LNG bunkering services safely.

“Portsmouth is looking to ensure that they have the right, safe, approach to support operational and commercial ambitions.”

Portsmouth City Council deputy ferry port manager Kalvin Baugh said: “With changes in the regulations governing emissions, it is clear that in the future more shipping will be fuelled by LNG.

“To help safeguard the port and meet the needs of our customers, Portsmouth International Port needs to be able to offer this facility.”

Lloyd’s has been engaged in LNG carrier classification and understanding ship-to-ship LNG transfer. The company recently secured LNG-as-fuel class contracts from Norway, Sweden, Finland, Canada and the Netherlands.
