Indonesia’s Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) has expanded its fleet with the addition of two Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGC), which are designed to transport LPG both regionally and internationally.

The two tankers, named the VLGC Pertamina Gas Tulip and the VLGC Pertamina Gas Bergenia, are claimed to be among the world’s largest gas tankers and feature up-to-date technology including the use of Augmented Reality (AR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The tankers were built in South Korea’s Hyundai Samho shipyard and officially launched on 9 January 2024.

Nicke Widyawati, Pertamina’s president-director emphasised the capabilities of the tankers.

Widyawati said: “The presence of these two VLGC ships will undoubtedly enhance the capability of the Pertamina Group in securing energy supplies to support national energy resilience. Their cutting-edge technology is evidence of Pertamina Group’s commitment to sustainable business”.

The tanker acquisition, which features a collaboration between PIS and BGN, will witness four more tankers being acquired across 2024. As stated by PIS, this will align with Indonesia’s NDC target by 2030 on low carbon and climate resilience.

According to PIS, it maintains “a crucial role in ensuring the national energy distribution of Indonesia”.

The tankers, which feature dual-fuel tanks, enable the optimisation of low-sulphur fuel and gas and can carry petrochemicals such as ammonia.

Ruya Bayegan, Group CEO of BGN, added: “We are delighted to see these two modern, efficient ships on the water, thanks to our collaborative partnership with PIS.

“We are pleased to help strengthen the energy security of Indonesia at the same time as supporting BGN’s global energy and commodities trading platform with these maritime assets.”

With the arrival of these vessels, PIS’s fleet currently stands at 97 units, including 61 tankers that operate on a global scale.
