Global oil and gas company Total has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to provide multifuel solutions that will help reduce emissions from the shipping fleet of French group CMA CGM.

The three-year deal will see Total supply fuel oil with a sulphur content of 0.5% to CMA CGM, allowing them to comply with new environmental regulations in the shipping sector.

Total will also provide fuel containing a sulphur content of 3.5% for ships equipped with exhaust gas-cleaning systems, also known as scrubbers, which reduce polluting emissions before they are released into the atmosphere.

Additional terms of the agreement include the supply of LNG to help reduce carbon dioxide, sulfur oxide and nitrogen oxide emissions, as well as particulate matters emissions, from CMA CGM's fleet.

CMA CGM vice-chairman Rodolphe Saadé said: “With the signature of this MoU, CMA CGM is continuing the sustainable development process begun several years ago.
