Norsepower, a provider of wind-assisted propulsion for the maritime industry, has opened a new rotor sail factory in Dafeng, China.
The facility is expected to produce 50 rotor sails annually, with an expansion plan to double output by the end of 2027.

It will be staffed by a diverse team of engineers, scientists, and industry experts to advance Norsepower’s vision for sustainable shipping, the company said.
Yancheng City vice mayor Jing Tang said: “We are honoured to welcome Norsepower to Dafeng Distric here in Yancheng.
“This factory not only brings new job opportunities and strengthens our industrial base but also represents a significant step forward in sustainable maritime solutions. We are excited to support Norsepower in delivering advanced rotor sails to the global market.”
The new factory is located close to essential shipping routes and shipyards, enabling the company to meet the increasing demand for eco-friendly maritime technologies.

Norsepower also claimed that the new facility showcases Finnish-Chinese engineering collaboration, following Finnish firms such as Nokia, Wärtsilä, and Rovio who have expanded their operations in China.
Norsepower CEO Heikki Pontynen said: “With this state-of-the-art facility, we are reinforcing our position as the leader in wind-assisted propulsion products. Norsepower is the pioneer of the entire industry.
“It coined the term “rotor sail”, opened the rotor sail market. Norsepower radically modernised the Flettner rotor concept, transforming it into a future proof, data-driven product.”
Recently, Oldendorff Carriers equipped its 100,488-dwt post-panamax bulker Chinook Oldendorff with three Norsepower Rotor Sails.
Collaboratively installed by Norsepower and CSSC Chengxi Shipyard in China, the vessel set sail for Vancouver, Canada, just a day after commissioning.
Norsepower also signed an agreement to supply its rotor sails to each of the three RoRo vessels being constructed for Louis Dreyfus Armateurs (LDA) for charter by aircraft manufacturer Airbus.
