Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) has announced the delivery of multi-purpose Prima Verde vessel at Onomichi Dockyard in Hiroshima, Japan.

To be operated by MOL Drybulk, the vessel is owned by Daishin Shipping.

Prima Verde is claimed to be the world’s “first” vessel of any type to incorporate green steel materials and operate on both marine gas oil (MGO) and wind-assisted propulsion.

The vessel’s hull is made from JGreeX, a green steel material supplied by JFE Steel Corporation, which significantly reduces CO2 emissions by allocating emission reductions from the steel manufacturing process to optional steel materials.

The “environmentally friendly” vessel measures 129.66m in length overall (LOA) and has a breadth of 23.6m, with a deadweight tonnage of 17,611t at the summer draft. It sails under the Liberian flag.

The Prima Verde is powered by an engine from Japan Engine Corporation that is capable of running exclusively on MGO.

This engine is claimed to deliver “high” combustion efficiency and “low” carbon dioxide emissions.

The vessel is also equipped with two VentoFoil wind power assisted vessel propulsion devices, supplied by ECONOWIND.

These devices are expected to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by harnessing wind power for propulsion.

In December 2024, MOL signed a long-term charter agreement with QatarEnergy for six QC-MAX LNG carriers (271,000m³ each).

Co-owned with COSCO SHIPPING LNG Investment (Shanghai), the vessels will be built at Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding in China and delivered between 2028 and 2031.

In November same year, MOL and KEPCO signed an MoU to study a liquefied hydrogen carrier, focusing on maritime transport, a step in advancing the hydrogen fuel supply chain.
