Vietnam Maritime Corporation (VIMC) has formed a strategic partnership with Keppel subsidiary M1, Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT), and SSI Solutions to digitise its maritime operations.

This collaboration aims to drive the adoption of 5G technology in Vietnam’s maritime sector, leveraging M1’s expertise in maritime 5G solutions.

The partnership will establish advanced 5G-powered use cases to enhance operational efficiency and support the digital transformation of VIMC’s ports.

Building  on M1’s success with “extensive and innovative” 5G projects in maritime operations, the initiative will focus on tele-remote control equipment, improved  automated guided vehicle (AGV) operations, and advanced surveillance systems.

VNPT Group vice president Nguyen Nam Long said: “VNPT highly appreciate the strengths and experience of SSI and M1 in consulting and deploying 5G for vertical industries, especially the seaport industry, and hope that this cooperation would bring benefits to all parties and all would gain significant revenue from 5G technology.”

M1 is supporting this project as part of its multi-year project launched  in late 2022,  aiming to deliver seamless 5G standalone (SA) coverage across Singapore’s southern coast and surrounding offshore waters.

M1, with support from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), is deploying a 5G SA network to test and develop maritime 5G applications as part of MPA’s Innovation Lab and IMDA’s testbed initiative.

M1 enterprise services chief Andrew Cheng said: “We have spent the last few years co-creating and introducing viable 5G-enabled commercial solutions to digitise Singapore’s maritime operations and make Maritime 5G a reality.

“By sharing our expertise and experience from successful use cases, we are contributing to the modernisation of one of Southeast Asia’s most critical maritime hubs.”

In 2023, The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and the Vietnam Maritime Administration (Vinamarine) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to enhance cooperation in the maritime and port sectors.
