The trials, which are expected to last between 12 and 18 months, will assess the updated solar power system’s practicality and performance under actual maritime conditions.

The first solar module technology to be tested is provided by Merlin Solar Technologies.

Known for their durability and reliable performance, Merlin Solar panels are designed to endure challenging conditions, ensuring sustained power delivery.

These panels combine the efficiency of mono-crystalline silicon with the benefits of being flexible, lightweight, and easy to install through peel-and-stick methods.

Merlin Solar founder and chief product officer Bob Brainard said: “Merlin Solar is proud to participate in this evaluation, bringing over a decade of proven marine solar experience to the cargo shipping industry.

“Our panels have delivered reliable, continuous performance in a variety of marine applications, from recreational vessels to defence platforms. This collaboration represents an important step in supporting the maritime sector’s shift toward cleaner, more sustainable energy solutions.”

Aries Marine has fitted the Merlin glass and non-glass panels onto custom-designed frames already installed on the ship.

Over the coming months, the ship will see the installation of more equipment, including various types of PV module technologies from different manufacturers.

Eco Marine Power president and founder Greg Atkinson said: “We are excited to announce the latest deployment of our ship solar power solution, now enhanced with an upgraded performance management system.

“We also welcome the participation of Merlin Solar in this important project, which advances the evaluation of zero-emission power technologies for ships.”

In February 2023, Eco Marine Power partnered with an UAE-based shipping company to conduct an Eco Ship technical study to explore renewable energy solutions for ships.
