Seattle-based shipping company Coastal Transportation has entered into an agreement with Inmarsat Maritime, a Viasat company, to implement NexusWave across its fleet.

The adoption of the connectivity solution will provide the shipping operator with cyber-secure and reliable communications for its refrigerated and general cargo vessels that operate between Seattle, Washington and ports in Western Alaska.

Coastal Transportation technical programme manager Stephanie Grisham said: “Upgrading to Inmarsat NexusWave was a natural next step for our cargo fleet.

“NexusWave is the only connectivity solution on the market that delivers the levels of security and reliability we need to support safe and efficient operations from port to port.”

Coastal Transportation relies on consistent connectivity to maintain both critical operations and crew communications.

The family-owned company, which often manages complex cargo inventories, cited increasing cyber threats as a driver behind its decision to enhance digital infrastructure across its vessels.

Inmarsat’s NexusWave offering includes a network design intended to support cyber security through segregated networks.

The service is managed and bonded, with coverage available globally and network availability reported at over 99.9%, according to Viasat.

This set-up is intended to ensure that ships and their crews retain continuous internet access on routes from Seattle to Dutch Harbor in the Alaskan Bering Sea, and additional destinations.

Inmarsat Maritime sales account manager Logan Murray said: “We are delighted to extend our longstanding relationship with Coastal Transportation – the latest in a fast-growing cohort of operators that appreciate the unique value of fully managed, bonded connectivity as an enabler of safe, efficient, and secure fleet operations.”

In August this year, Anglo-Eastern chose NexusWave to upgrade the Hadley Shipping Group’s fleet to improve its connectivity.

In May, Inmarsat reached an agreement with Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) to support the migration of the latter’s fleet from the Fleet Xpress (FX) service to NexusWave.
