UK-based Navigator Gas has taken delivery of an ethane / ethylene capable liquefied gas carrier from Jiangnan Shipyard in Shanghai, China.

The newly delivered American Bureau of Shipping (ABS)-classed vessel, known as Navigator Aurora, is the largest ethane / ethylene capable liquefied gas carrier worldwide.

Equipped with dual fuel engines, the new vessel has a cargo carrying capacity of more than 37,000 cubic metres (cbm).

The dual fuel engines will enable the vessels to run either on diesel fuel or liquefied natural gas (LNG), allowing it to fulfil the existing and future air emissions requirements.

Aside from Navigator Aurora, three more ethane / ethylene midsize vessels with ABS class will be delivered during this year and early next year.

American Bureau of Shipping global gas solutions vice-president Patrick Janssens said: “In the coming years, we expect to see many more projects being developed to service the expanding gas export market from the US.

“With our experience with the latest technologies for gas carriers and LNG fuelled ships, we are well positioned to assist our clients with their new projects.

“Our strong presence in the US and longstanding history of assisting industry stakeholders with understanding United States Coast Guard regulations make us the obvious choice for companies that need to support vessels operating in US waters.”

Navigator Aurora has already been chartered for a long-term period to export ethane from the US to Borealis, Sweden.

In June, ABS joined forces with Arista Shipping, Gaztransport & Technigaz (GTT), Deltamarin and Wärtsilä in Project Forward, a joint development project (JDP) to bring LNG-fuelled vessels into the mainstream shipping sector.
