Finland-based manufacturing company Konecranes has secured an order to provide 12 Rubber Tired Gantry (RTG) cranes to the South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) in Charleston, South Carolina, US.
Scheduled to be delivered next year, the cranes will be supplied to SCPA’s Wando Welch terminal in the Port of Charleston.

Once installed, the 12 new RTGs will join SCPA’s existing fleet of cranes, which include 53 RTGs provided by Konecranes.
SCPA currently owns and operates public seaport facilities in Charleston, South Carolina and an inland terminal in Greer, also in South Carolina.
SCPA terminal operations director Stevenson Kemp Jr said: "This makes our 5th RTG order with Konecranes since 1998.
“We continue to return to Konecranes because their RTGs have proven to be best-in-class in quality of construction, operating characteristics and long-term serviceability.

Featuring a lifting capacity of 50t, the newly ordered RTGs can stack 1-over-5 containers high and six plus truck lane wide.
The RTGs will feature Konecranes’ active load control, which prevents container sway to increase container handling performance.
Apart from featuring auto-steering and truck lift prevention capabilities, they will have built-in readiness for special features such as stack collision prevention and auto-truck guiding, which will be used when the cranes are transitioned to semi-automated operation.
Last month, Konecranes entered into an agreement to provide two Boxhunter RTGs for Ben Nghe Port in Vietnam.
