The Met Office has unveiled their new product, Safe Voyage, to offer weather information to offshore vessels travelling in open water to protect them from maritime threats.
The product will help the vessels minimise exposure to severe weather, improve safety and keep project costs to a minimum.

It provides detailed weather information for planning the vessel’s route across the globe in open water, as well as moving equipment and personnel safely and efficiently.
With Safe Voyage, weather forecasts are generated five days ahead of the ship’s schedule and will be presented in a convenient graphical format such as wind and sea conditions along the route and tabulated data every three hours to map significant wave height, swell details, wind and weather.
The technology can be incorporated in various sized vessels and offers a range of parameters to be employed by the mariners to plan their routes in accordance to the weather forecasts as well as enhance the safety of the mariners and reduce the project costs.
Met Office head of oil and gas and renewables Patrick Sachon said: "In marginal situations it’s vital to make decisions based on the best information possible, SafeVoyage provides reliable information to support decisions that could impact safety and efficiency.

The forecast information is leveraged to pave the way for decisions concerning the best route and departure time. Thresholds can be set and winds specified at 10m, 50m or 100m as optional.
The Soft Voyage forecast will be monitored by Met Office’s experienced meteorologists, as well as including bespoke commentary.
Earlier this month, Met Office had secured new forecast service contracts with two farm developments in Germany to facilitate the safe construction and commissioning of these offshore wind farms in the south west of the German Bight area of the North Sea.
