Royal IHC has launched and christened the trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) Jun Yang 1 for CCCC Guangzhou Dredging (GDC) at its shipyard in Kinderdijk, the Netherlands.

GDC awarded the TSHD contract to IHC in November 2012, specifying the design, construction and delivery requirements.

Construction on the dredger commenced in January this year and is scheduled to be completed by the end of July 2016.

The 167.5m long TSHD with a capacity of 21,028m³, is fitted with two suction tubes, each with a submerged dredge pump, to ensure efficient dredging.

The suction tubes, with an inside diameter of 1,200 / 1,100mm, can dredge up to a depth of 40-60m while the starboard suction tube can be stretched to a depth of 90m.

The two inboard dredge pumps are used for shore discharging and rainbowing. The 31m wide and 12.2m deep TSHD operates at speeds of 16.3 knots, and can accommodate 45 onboard.

The highly automated TSHD will be used by GDC for capital dredging and land reclamation jobs globally.

Jun Yang 1, which is the 19th vessel IHC is building for GDC, will be the largest of its kind in China.

IHC launched two more TSHDs, 5,500m³ Ilembe and 1,840m³ Mahury, earlier this year.

Ilembe is being built at the Kinderdijk yard for Transnet National Ports Authority, and Mahury for Baggerbedrijf de Boer – Dutch Dredging in Varna, Bulgaria.
