Spain’s Sener has successfully completed the engineering works in conjunction with the reoutfit and overhaul of the Argentine Navy’s Almirante Irizar icebreaker.
The vessel underwent the major refurbishment works following a fire accident in the South Atlantic in 2007.

As a result of the incident, 75% of its lower structures from the hull, decks and superstructures aft from the accommodation area were damaged.
The vessel’s pipes, fittings and auxiliary equipment, ventilation ducts, cable trays, cables laid and distribution panels, among others, were also damaged.
The overhaul programme carried out by Sener included a general repair of parts not affected by the fire, ordinary tasks typical from a dry-docking, some new parts and refurbishment for out-of-date equipment and systems.
The project resulted in the replacement and modelisation of 760t of steel structures, 42 structure blocks in addition to the construction of 4,000t of structure and equipment, auxiliary structures as well as 4,000m of pipe lines.

By GlobalDataMoreover, Sener modelled and renovated 12,000m of pipe lines, 2,500m of electric cable trays and 2,250m of HVAC ducts, among others.
The programme was completed in collaboration with the Argentine Navy and the Tandanor SACyF shipyard.
Constructed in 1978, Almirante Irizar icebreaker is also designed to support general and refrigerated, as well as liquid cargo facilities, passenger, scientific research, hospital and logistics.
In addition, the vessel features a hull specifically designed for Antarctic waters navigation and icebreaking.
