"I would like to thank the members of the judging panel who had a difficult job to select only three names from the thousands of great names that were submitted."

The new dual-fuel vessels will be capable of running on either liquefied natural gas (LNG) or ultra-low sulphur diesel.

The first and second vessel in the series is expected to be in August 2016 and October 2016, respectively.

The third vessel is scheduled for delivery in February 2017.

Salish Orca will be deployed in the Comox – Powell River route, while Salish Eagle and Salish Raven will start operations in the Southern Gulf Islands.

The first two vessels, with a capacity to accommodate 145 vehicles and 600 passengers, will replace existing vessels, Queen of Burnaby and Queen of Nanaimo.

These new-builds are part of BC Ferries’ vessel replacement plan to standardise its ships for greater interoperability.
