This employs a competence-based methodology found in the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW).

Seagull Maritime Training Content director Bent Christoffersen said: "Container Industry Competence Standard is a complete competency assessment and training programme.

"It is a response to an operator need for greater confidence that there are no gaps in competence and amongst the officers on their vessels."

"Where the training has already been completed, it also allows companies to assess training effectiveness and identify any shortcomings that need addressing."

The new programme is suitable for container ships of all sizes, from feeders to super-post-Panamax ships. It will enable the vessels to enhance crew knowledge and competence, as well as meet international regulatory requirements.

It covers several job roles and topics, including stowage and planning, safe cargo operations and maintenance.

In addition, the system connects to Seagull’s modular e-learning library and competence evaluation system, to provide a complete training and assessment package for individual officers.

"Container Industry Compliance Standard is not so much regulation-driven; it is a response to an operator need for greater confidence that there are no gaps in competence and amongst the officers on their vessels," Christoffersen added.

CICS has been drawn in collaboration with container shipping operator Rickmers Ship management, Seagull Maritime said.

The company offered significant inputs into cargo-handling competencies specific to container vessel operations.
