Hamburg-based L-3 SAM Electronics has installed its Voyage Data Recorder (VDR 4350) system on Carnival Cruise Lines’s fleet of 24 ships.

The retrofit programme was carried out by L-3 GA International (L-3 GAI), an affiliated marine electronics company of L-3 SAM.

The system offers extended recording time, electronic chart display and information system (ECDIS) based onboard and onshore replay features, along with options for remote control and maintenance through SATCOM.

L-3 Marine Systems International president Ulrich Weinreuter said: "L-3 has been serving Carnival Cruise Lines for many years and we are extremely proud to have successfully completed this major upgrade project.

"The system offers extended recording time, electronic chart display and information system (ECDIS) based onboard and onshore replay features, along with options for remote control and maintenance through SATCOM."

Based on modular Ethernet, it has a complete backup capacity for the storage and downloading of recorded data, and also includes extensive graphics analysis tools that provide simplified export functions to standard Microsoft Office applications.

As a vital element of integrated bridge assemblies, the system is currently in use on vessels of all types and sizes, the company said. It is an important part of L-3 SAM’s NACOS Platinum series, which is used by various cruise ship operators.

Carnival recently introduced a new high-speed Wi-Fi service for its vessels to provide faster, more stable and powerful internet service at sea.

Carnival said this network will offer broadband wireless internet network on all of Carnival’s 101 ships across nine cruise line brands.
