Wärtsilä has secured a new design contract for a multi-purpose platform supply vessel (MPSV) from Tidewater, a US-based provider of offshore service vessels.

The order comes with an option for a further three similar vessels. The new MPSV will be built by Tersan shipyard in Turkey and Tidewater’s subsidiary Norwegian Troms Offshore Supply Group will operate the vessel.

According to Tidewater’s requirements, the ship will have a compact design with a high deadweight to provide maximum cargo capacity, in addition to delivering operational efficiency and reduced fuel consumption.

The vessel will be designed to fit three eight-cylinder in-line Wärtsilä 26 main engines, propulsion systems with a ballast water management system and inert gas generators.

Additional features of the vessel include an active heave compensated construction crane with a 150t capacity and a helicopter deck for subsea construction activities.

With the Wärtsilä design, the ship’s hull and propulsion will be in compliance with DNV ice-class ICE 1A to operate in extreme weather conditions. It will have sufficient strength, power and equipment to operate in arctic areas.

The vessel will also be capable of operating under cold climate conditions according to the DNV DEICE-class, and is scheduled for delivery in 2016.
