Shelf Drilling’s subsidiary has contracted Lamprell to build and deliver two high-specification, LeTourneau-designed, Super 116E (enhanced)-class self-elevating mobile offshore drilling platforms.

Under the $370m contract, the two jack-up rigs will be designed by engineering and operations personnel from Lamprell, Shelf Drilling and its customer.

Commenting on the contract, Lamprell chief executive officer James Moffat said: “This is also our second multiple-rig contract award with a major international drilling contractor in the space of a month, demonstrating that the group’s strong project execution in its core markets is being recognised.”

Featuring a fit-for-purpose offshore drilling technology, the two rigs will be capable of operating in water depths of up to 350ft and accommodate about 160 people.

The new-build rigs will be used for operations in South East Asia and in constructing wells with maximum drilling depth of 30,000ft.

As part of the contract, fabrication work on the rigs will be carried out by Lamprell in its Hamriyah yard in the UAE.

Delivery of the first rig is scheduled to take place in the third quarter of 2016, while the second rig is expected in the second quarter of 2017.
