Dutch shipping company Imtech Marine has received an order from AG EMS to supply electrical and electronics systems for the new Helgoland ferry.

In addition to electrical and electronics systems, Imtech will be involved in technical co-ordination and project management activities.

The Helgoland ferry is being constructed by Fassmer shipyard, which is located in Berne in Lower Saxony, Germany.

Under the electrical and electronic systems order, Imtech will provide ship automation, switchgears, motor starters, distribution panels, lighting and complete cable networks for the new ship.

Imtech will also supply navigation and communication equipment, including the special stabilisers that will keep the vessel safe in the extreme weather conditions of the island of Helgoland, where it will run a year-round service.

The new multi-purpose vessel will carry around 1,000 people and ten cargo containers and will move at a maximum speed of around 20 knots.

The vessel is designed to ensure an environmentally conscious journey. It will use liquefied natural gas (LNG), an environmentally friendly fossil fuel that has reduced carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions and produces little sulphur oxide.

Germany-based AG EMS was established in 1843 and offers shipping services to the German Northsea island of Borkum and other shipping lines.

Following its acquisition of Cassen Eils in 2010, the company started year-round island supply transport to the island of Helgoland.

AG EMS offers seasonal scheduled transfers from Bremerhaven, Wilhelmshaven and Büsum and winter transfers from Cuxhaven.
