Marine transportation company Crowley Maritime’s liner services group has acquired 500 new 40ft, high-cube containers.

The company said that the acquisition will boost its equipment fleet, which currently comprises more than 45,000 container units, as well has help in phasing out its older containers.
The new containers, which contain more durable North American oak wood flooring and exceed all new and amended ISO standards for freight container door security applications, will be used in all liner service operations in Latin America, the Caribbean and Puerto Rico.
Crowley senior vice-president and general manager of Puerto Rico and Caribbean services John Douglass said the company’s customers value having current, reliable equipment of varying sizes when and where they need it.
“This container acquisition is in keeping with our commitment to meeting and exceeding their needs,” Douglass said.

By GlobalDataCrowley senior vice-president and general manager of Latin America services John Hourihan said the addition of these new containers, along with other equipment of various sizes and types added last year, represents an investment of more than $23m.
Since 2003, the company had invested nearly $240m to modernise and grow its intermodal equipment fleet.
Crowley operates ocean cargo carriers between the US and Puerto Rico, the Caribbean, the Bahamas, Central America, the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Cuba.
The company also operates container ships, specialty vessels and ro-ro barges that handle a range of freight, including vehicles, construction equipment, HAZMAT, breakbulk, heavy lift, perishable cargo and over-dimensional items.
Last year the company acquired 400 53ft (102″ wide) dry high-cube containers and 375 53ft chassis to help it serve shipping cargo between the US and Puerto Rico.
The containers have a capacity of 3,931ft3 and 42,660lb.
Crowley took delivery of the first of 2,400 53ft and 45ft (102″ wide) high-cube containers / chassis in 2003.
