German shipping company Hapag-Lloyd has partnered with Switzerland-based logistics provider Kuehne + Nagel to reduce 17% carbon dioxide (CO2) emission from their joint container-transport activities.
The partnership aims to achieve the goal under the Carbon and Sustainability Pact agreed by both companies.

It intends to reduce 17% of CO2 emissions from each container moved by Hapag-Lloyd by 2020 compared to the 2017 level on selected routes.
The latest collaboration is expected to give Kuehne + Nagel customers new options based on transparent emission data related to the movement of their containers.
Hapag-Lloyd will also help Kuehne + Nagel to use information about the CO2 emissions of its ships, which has previously been verified by Clean Cargo Working Group (CCWG).
As part of the Carbon and Sustainability Pact, both companies seek to jointly develop long-term solutions for container transport.

By GlobalDataUnder the pact, they have also agreed to undertake various additional actions to better protect the environment, including the plans to optimise the movement of empty containers, as well as identify alternatives to truck transports using ships or trains.
Furthermore, the partnership plans to use advanced and eco-friendly reefer equipment whenever possible, in addition to using containers with steel rather than wooden floors.
Last month, Hapag-Lloyd completed the integration of United Arab Shipping Agency (UASC) into its portfolio of companies.
The integration has enabled Hapag-Lloyd to offer 125 liner services worldwide.
