ICTSI South Pacific International Container Terminal (SPICT) has commenced operations at its Lae Tidal Basin (LTB) terminal, situated at the Port of Lae in Papua New Guinea (PNG).

The development comes after the PNG Government granted approval to SPICT to begin operations at the LTB facility.

SPICT is set to upgrade LTB’s current operating system with a new Navis N4 system as part of a concession agreement for the Port of Lae, which was signed between SPICT’s parent company, International Container Terminal Services (ICTSI), and state-owned entity PNG Ports (PNGPCL).

"We believe that the benefits of automating processes and information flow will accrue to each and every one of the port’s users very quickly."

ICTSI also aims to expand the port’s facilities and improve its capabilities under the arrangement, which will run for a 25-year period.

ICTSI Asia Pacifichead Christian Gonzalez said: “We know the next few weeks will be a difficult transition, particularly given the quick adoption of N4 to the working environment.

“Team SPICT is extremely excited and committed, however, to face the challenges of delivering such an upgrade to the way the terminal is managed.

ICTSI also noted that the updates to LTB’s terminal operating system (TOS) are expected to rapidly streamline the flow of information at the facility, as well as significantly increase both seaside and landside productivity.

In addition, SPICT is also scheduled to introduce new TOS modules at the terminal as part of the upgrade programme, which are expected to be operational ahead of the arrival of the company’s new mobile harbour cranes (MHCs) in April.
