The Port of Long Beach has partnered with GE Transportation to launch a pilot project, which is expected to improve cargo flow through the port.

The project is also set to help increase visibility and improve real-time decision-making at the Port of Long Beach, as the volumes and complexity of operations are increasing at the port.

As part of the project, which will last for two to three months, GE Transportation will implement its Port Optimizer solution at marine terminals, including Total Terminals International and Long Beach Container Terminal.

Port of Long Beach executive director Mario Cordero said: “We experienced record volumes last year, with an 11% increase to 7.54 million 20ft equivalent units, making 2017 our busiest year ever.

“This partnership with GE is providing an important trial for us as cargo and competition grow.

“We need new and innovative ways to ensure our customers can move their containers from water to land quickly, reliably, and at a cost that makes sense for their business.”

The latest project will be based on a successful pilot programme between the parties, where Port Optimizer is helping to increase the visibility of incoming cargo from two days to two weeks.

Port Optimizer is a cloud-based software that is designed to improve supply chain performance and predictability by providing real-time data through a single portal to stakeholders across the supply chain.

It is also developed to integrate data from across the port and to combine machine learning, as well as deep domain expertise to help the supply chain monitor and respond to dynamic conditions.

The software ultimately enables maximum flow and delivery of cargo at port.
