Sweden-based technology company Semcon is working with Cimco Marine to complete a pilot study to explore the potential of BMW’s twin turbo, 3l diesel engine for use in the marine industry.

The study aims to build the world’s first 3l diesel outboard engine with more than 200hp capability.

It expects to build a prototype of the engine within this year and plans to produce the engine by 2020.

Semcon technical project manager Henrik Einarsson said: “This engine offers major potential for the marine environment.

“High output and outstanding quality are important features for many people operating professionally, such as people running working boats and fast recreational boats.”

For the pilot study, Semcon has been providing the design work, calculation, and simulation.

The project’s next phase, which is scheduled to begin soon, will involve developing a prototype that will be tested in water.

Cimco Marine CEO Cecilia Anderberg said: “The outcome of the pilot study is extremely positive.

“We have worked together with Semcon to identify what measures are needed for us to embark upon the next phase. This gives us every chance of taking the project to the next level.”

Cimco Marine previously developed the world’s first diesel outboard engine, known as OXE Diesel, in the higher output range.

OXE Diesel is capable of reducing lifecycle cost for commercial usage and complies with the Nato ‘single-fuel’ directive.
