Varo Energy subsidiary, Reinplus Fiwado Bunker, has extended its partnership to improve the availability of GoodFuels’ biofuel oil (BFO) to deep-sea vessels leaving from Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

As part of the new partnership, Varo will help scale the sourcing, production, blending and distribution of GoodFuels’ BFO across the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp (ARA) region.

GoodFuels will continue to focus on the sourcing of sustainable feedstocks for the BFO.

Reinplus Fiwado Bunker managing director Ben van Kol said: “Due to upcoming IMO spec changes and stricter emission requirements, the demand for alternative shipping fuels is increasing.”

Launched by GoodFuels last year, BFO serves as a direct ‘drop-in’ replacement for heavy fuel oil, containing no sulphur and 90% less carbon.

The biofuels do not require modifications and are suitable for every type of vessel.

The latest extension follows a partnership signed by Varo and GoodFuels last year for sustainable inland shipping.

“This collaboration will enable us to rapidly scale and offer one of the most climate-friendly fuel options.”

Under the partnership, GoodFuels Marine’s sustainable advanced biofuels were made available at the port of Rotterdam and along inland shipping routes in the Netherlands through the Reinplus Fiwado Bunker network.

GoodFuels CEO Dirk Kronemeijer said: “This collaboration will enable us to rapidly scale and offer one of the most climate-friendly fuel options for shipping to deep sea customers in the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp region.

“Decarbonisation makes the adoption of alternative fuel solutions increasingly important and we are confident that this will help to further accelerate the maritime industry’s sustainability drive.”

Earlier this month, IKEA Transport and Logistics Services, CMA CGM, the GoodShipping Program and the Port of Rotterdam announced a partnership to test and scale the use of GoodFuels’ sustainable marine biofuel oil.
