ABB has secured a contract from Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding to supply a comprehensive power and propulsion package for the construction of China’s first domestically built cruise ship.

As part of the propulsion package, the company will supply two Azipod steerable propulsion systems, a complete electric power plant concept with electricity generators, main switchboards and distribution transformers.

The propulsion package will also include a propulsion control system for moving the Azipod units from the bridge.

Shanghai Waogaoqiao Shipbuilding general manager Gang Chen said: “With this project, China is making great strides in cruise shipbuilding.

The Azipod units can reduce fuel consumption by up to 15%, as well as noise and vibration, and offer 360° manoeuvrability. The drive motor of Azipod is located in a submerged pod below the ship’s hull.
