Japan-based shipping firm Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) has revealed a vessel design for a next-generation coal carrier, named EeneX.
MOL developed the ship design in collaboration with domestic shipyards. The ship is intended to support reliable and economically efficient transport of coal.

The 235m-long and 38m-wide EeneX carrier design will have a draft of approximately 20.05m.
The 90,000DWT next-generation coal carrier will feature a double-hull structure to enable cargo holds with completely flat sides and avoids needing to scrape out coal.
As a result, the efficiency of carrying out operations and accelerating cargo handling will increase, according to MOL.
The semi-box shape of the hold stops the cargo from accumulating inside, allows for further improvement in discharging operations and accelerates handling of cargo.

The cargo holds of standard coal carriers are sometimes filled with ballast water to maintain the ship’s stability during certain voyage types. In contrast, the EeneX carrier has only dedicated cargo holds that offer stability without being filled with ballast water.
This provision will not only reduce preparation time for ballasting into cargo hold but also decrease the risk of salt and rust contamination.
MOL has been working on developing coal carrier designs. The company in partnership with Tohoku Electric Power and Namura Shipbuilding secured in principle approval from Lloyd’s Register for the design of an LNG-powered coal carrier in 2017.
In April, MOL announced that it will install a navigation system using augmented reality (AR) technology on 21 very large crude oil carriers (VLCCs).
