Wärtsilä has introduced a hybrid installation system for bulk carriers in the marine sector, first being deployed on the M/V Paolo Topic vessel.
The bulk carrier was constructed at Onomichi Dockyard, Japan, and managed by Marfin Management SAM. An agreement for the project was signed earlier this week in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

Hybrid power module Wärtsilä HY will ensure that the new technologies are installed unproblematically and that they can be controlled in conjunction with the ship’s several existing power production systems.
This is possible due to the use of an energy management system that gains total control of the ship’s engines, batteries and power distribution.
The Finnish company also noted that solar panels are being installed on the weather deck, an industry-first for the maritime sector.
Wärtsilä marine business director Giulio Tirelli said: “This new technology development, utilising a combination of engines, solar power and batteries, represents a milestone for the industry and is made possible by the Wärtsilä HY integration.

The integrated solution will help to reduce fuel consumption and maintenance costs.
Along with the advanced level of environmental sustainability, the system will enable Paolo Topic to become a technologically advanced bulk carrier.
