Worldwide shipping and logistics group CMA CGM has launched a new containership fuelled by liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Named CMA CGM Jacques Saade, the 23,000 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) ship is being built at the Shanghai Jiangnan-Changxing shipyard in China. The container has been named in honour of CMA CGM Group founder.

This is the first vessel in a new fleet of nine containerships. It was announced by CMA CGM Group chairman and chief executive officer Rodolphe Saadé in 2017.

These French-flagged vessels feature hydrodynamically optimised hull, advanced bridge design and a tactical display for improved dynamic navigation briefings.

The 400m-long and 61m-wide ships are fitted with an enhanced propeller, rudder blade and the Becker Twisted Fin.

The containership will also be equipped with a path prediction system, a smart eye system and augmented reality screens to provide the ship’s rate of rotation, wharf distance and transverse speed information.

Jacques Saade will also feature a smart system for ventilation management for the reefer containers carried in the hold.

Rodolphe Saadé said: “With the launching of the first 23,000TEU ship powered by liquified natural gas, we demonstrate that energy transition can be effectively successful in our industry if all the players work together.

“It paves the way to a global shipping approach where economic growth and competitiveness can coexist with sustainability and the fight against climate change.”

The new French International Register (RIF)-registered vessels will be added on the group’s French Asia Line (Asia-Northern Europe) next year.
