It is the first instance where a Singapore Registry of Ships-registered harbour tug underwent a remote annual survey.

The companies worked together to develop new methods to carry out digital and remote marine surveys.

The crew on PSA Aspen and a surveyor in BV’s Singapore office carried out the survey and effectively communicated to carry out the survey of the statutory and classification requirements.

The instructions were conveyed by the BV surveyor live and necessary images and a real-time video recorded.

PSA Marine MD Peter Chew said: “We are delighted to partner with BV in piloting the first remote annual marine survey for harbour tug in Singapore.

“The innovative technologies used in the remote survey have enabled PSA Marine to complete our surveys on schedule despite Covid-19 while ensuring our harbour tugs continue serving our customers without delay or disruptions.

“Our staff have embraced these changes and technologies with agility and resilience. They are fully supportive of PSA Marine’s continuing efforts to build a smarter, safer and more efficient fleet of the future.”

The companies said that remote surveys and other process automation and digital technology will be adopted more in the post-Covid-19 world.

In March, Marine technology company Wartsila and PSA Marine completed the IntelliTug project initial sea trials.
