Shipbuilding company Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has secured an order for five 15,000 twenty-foot equivalent (TEU) liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered container ships from a client in Asia.

The total value of the order is approximately $708m, reported Business Korea.

The container ships will be supplied in a sequence, starting from July 2023.

The vessels will be designed as eco-friendly ships and will use LNG as their main fuel. It will enable the shipowner to comply with regulations on harmful gas emissions such as sulphur oxides and carbon dioxide.

In addition, the vessels will be equipped with several fuel-saving devices and SVESSEL, a smart ship solution of Samsung Heavy Industries’ own development.

An unnamed SHI official said: “Based on differentiated eco-friendly technologies, we will proactively develop customised products and expand our market dominance.”

This month, Samsung Heavy Industries secured an order for two 13,000 TEU container vessels from a client in Oceania.

The value of the order was nearly $205m.

The vessels will be supplied in a sequence, starting in the first quarter of 2023.

The new vessels will be environmentally friendly as they will be equipped with a ballast water treatment system (BWTS) and a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) device to reduce the emission of nitrogen oxide.

Last month, the company secured a similar order for two large container ships worth a total of $204m from a client in Oceania.

So far, the Korean shipbuilder has secured a total of 22 LNG fuel propulsion vessels, including very large crude carriers (VLCCs), shuttle tankers, and S-MAX ships.

Its order intake in 2021 adds up to ten ships valued at $7.8bn, which constitutes approximately 17% of the company’s order-receiving goal for 2021.

The list includes nine container ships and one LNG carrier, of which five are LNG-powered.
