Finnish shipbuilder Meyer Turku has commenced the construction of a new vessel known as Mein Schiff 2, which will be operated by German cruise line TUI Cruises once completed.

Mein Schiff 2 is the sixth next-generation cruise ship being built for TUI Cruises by Meyer Turku and will be a sister ship to Mein Schiff 1.

Meyer Turku is expected to deliver Mein Schiff 1 next year and Mein Schiff 2 by 2019.

Both ships will be developed on the basis of the Mein Schiff 6 design and are set to include various improvements and new features to provide a better experience for customers.

Mein Schiff 2 will be able to carry 2,894 guests and will be 315m in length, which is 20m longer than Mein Schiff 6.

The ship will also feature a 438m jogging track, which is almost twice as long as the track on-board Mein Schiff 6, as well as a closed and covered sports arena.

"We have just floated out the newly developed new Mein Schiff 1 and begin directly assembling its sister, the new Mein Schiff 2, from pre-produced grand blocks."

Both Mein Schiff 1 and Mein Schiff 2 are expected to include a climbing wall.

Meyer Turku CEO Jan Meyer said: “We have just floated out the newly developed new Mein Schiff 1 and begin directly assembling its sister, the new Mein Schiff 2, from pre-produced grand blocks.

"It shows the increasing pace that we are working at, while at the same time implementing our large investment programme with the large goliath gantry crane being only one example of it.

“Working on our ships and our capabilities will prepare us for the increasing international competition.

"The process of lifting the crane is quite interesting: we will first lift the first leg in two weeks’ time, followed by the second shortly after.

“It sounds very simple, but the crane’s beam’s own weight is 2,500t and still the main crane beam is lifted by the crane legs to the height of over 100m in early November.”

Meyer Turku also noted that its new gantry crane will reach 130m in height when fully erected.
